Usefulness of Foley

Today I researched the use of foley at 'foleycutking.com'.
This entails the use of post-production sounds edited into the actual film. An example of a way of doing this would be hitting shells rhythmically on the ground and shaking metal chains to present the sound of horse movements.
Foley can be used to make scenes more dramatic with a clearer sound. Or it could be simply more intense or in some cases more quiet to create suspense. The link shown displays an example of the horse noise I mentioned earlier but more intense, displaying a war scene:
